Colourised pictures (probably mock ups) of French Crown Jewels Posted by Janet on November 11, 2019, 5:03 am I found these on Pinterest and although I am certain they are not real, they really do give a flavour of how incredible these jewels were. What a tragedy!

Some one has taken a lot of time to enhance what look like items from the official catalogue (with photos) from the sale of French crown jewels. Unfortunately, to my eyes, the colouring of the various coloured gemstone parures makes the stones look artificial. But what an incredible effort the person has made!

I recall reading (I cannot recall where!) Sybil Sassoon bought the sapphire tiara and necklace but replaced the sapphires as the original ones y were not of great quality. They were selected originally for their size and to meet the requirements of the Emperor that the jewels be as grand as possibly can be but the stones weren't necessarily the best quality available. Fortunately Sybil had plenty of money to replace them with better. Previous Message Many thanks Janet! Some of the biggest sapphires of the parure were called "doublets" as blue colored glass was sticked at the back of the sapphire to make it look darker blue. I suppose these were the sapphires that were replaced by Sybil Sassoon. An identical sapphire tiara belongued to princess Augusta of Bavaria, grand-daughter of emperor François-Joseph. Was it the french one or a copy ?

Do we know what happened to the smaller diadems? Considering when the items came up for sale they would have been considered to have had some importance provenance and in some cases still very fashionable I wonder if any of them are still around? Vincent Meylan in Christie's has described those which have passed through Christie's auction rooms. A necklace which will be auctioned today by Christie's in Geneva may be a somewhat remodelled version of one of the ruby necklaces. See Vincent Meylan's Instagram post https://www.instagram.com/p/B4dbYceIvwB/ Some of the jewels are today held in the Louvre having been acquired by the museum from time to time. Others are till in private collections. We should try to do a thread at some stage and gather our collective knowledge and previous posts in one place. The beautiful pearl tiara worn by Empress Eugenie went into the Thurn and Taxis collection. When many jewels from that collection were sold, the tiara was acquired for the Louvre. I was recently in Washington DC and saw the French Jewels that reside at the American Museum of Natural History (I personally they should be transferred to the Louvre). I have two questions: 1. Were they not officially part of the Joyeaux de France and that is why they escaped the sale? I suppose they were private jewels and were inherited. They just seemed so grand to be private.
