Queen Mary. A gem encrusted coronation gift
Posted by Beth on January 24, 2020, 7:11 am
In contrast to the gifts presented at the weddings of the leading royals (in the past), rarely is there information about Coronation gifts -- certainly not a neatly catalogued list in the media.
For an exhibition in aid of charity in London in 1937 the King, Queen Elizabeth (the Queen Mother), Queen Mary and other royals lent various items from their collections.
One was the gift of the Worshipful Company of Needlemakers to Queen Mary.
I wonder if this is currently in the Royal Collection?
A very good topic Beth and thanks for exposing it. I wonder if gifts given at a coronation are treated as a private/ personal gift, or are they treated as say state owned gifts similar to when royals receive gifts while on state visits abroad?
There is some blurring of the lines and protocols on this because I read somewhere that if one wanted a state owned gift gifted to them through the monarch, they would have to pay tax and insurance cost on it or it could be granted as a lifelong loan to a recipient only to be returned to the reigning monarch when the person granted the loan passes.
Regards,
Dave.
