Londonderry emerald suite Posted by Beth on February 7, 2020, 3:31 pm It seems to be generally accepted that the Londonderry emeralds were depicted in this painting of Edith, Marchioness of Londonderry by Laszlo. I accepted the possibility of that, until I took a closer look at the painting. I feel that the artist has depicted either amethysts or perhaps rubies; definitely not emeralds. What do others think? I think that Edith, the 7th Marchioness was wearing the suite when photographed in 1939 Even though this shows a tiara, not a necklace, the elements seem to match those seen in later photos of the necklace, although the earrings are different. Slightly closer view Edith, Marchioness of Londonderry was said to be wearing emeralds when the photo below was taken in 1930, but her arm is obscuring a clear view of her necklace. Elizabeth, Lady Sudeley is said to be wearing the Londonderry emeralds in this photo.

Or are they still with the descendants of Lady Mari Bury? I have a report from 1959 of Viscountess Bury wearing the necklace at the coming out dance for her daughter. The wording of the report also allows for the inference that there was perhaps a tiara with emeralds. [Note: Edith, Lady Londonderry died in April 1959] Tatler 4 November 1959. Edith, Marchioness of Londonderry had a diamond bracelet with a large emerald given to her by her friend, Laura Corrigan. It was auctioned in May 2018 by Sotheby's. See http://www.sothebys.com/en/auctions/ecatalogue/2018/magnificent-jewels-and-noble-jewels-ge1802/lot.320.html According to Sotheby's Edith, Marchioness of Londonderry wore the bracelet to the Opening of Parliament in 1948. Whether Edith, Marchioness of Londonderry wore the bracelet to the Opening of Parliament in 1948 is a moot point. In the only photo I could find of her on the day, her arms are covered.

Re: Londonderry emerald suite Posted by Charles on July 20, 2021, 5:54 pm, in reply to "Re: Londonderry emerald suite" In answer, The Londonderry emerald "parure" inherited by Lady Mairi Bury (and worn by her at her daughter Elizabeth's dance at Londonderry House in 1959) is currently on display at the Victoria & Albert Museum's jewellery gallery. It consists of a necklace and earrings (there was no separate tiara, the necklace could be worn as one though). The emerald parure pre-dates the discovery of emeralds in Russia in the nineteenth century. So, they are not "Siberian Emeralds" as is sometimes claimed. The "Corrigan Emerald" is much later in date and was a present to Edith, Marchioness of Londonderry in the 1920s. Previous Message Superb photo. Thank you Laurent F! My understanding is that the jewels are still owned by the Marquess of Londonderry. None of the jewels on display is included in the V & A's data bank whereas jewels which have been donated are.

Photo posted by Janet When Edith, as Lady Castlereagh, presented her sister-in-law at Court in March 1907 she wore the pearl tiara with the upright pear shaped pearls as well as a different necklace. Detail Later, as Marchioness of Londonderry, Edith wore the necklace to the Opening of Parliament in November 1932 She also wore the necklace, but I think with the larger pear shaped pearl drops, to the 1937 Coronation. 1937 Coronation. How often the Marchionesses wore these pearls is difficult to say, as there are few photos publicly available; however, Edith, as Dowager Marchioness, was photographed wearing the tiara without the upright pear shaped pearls and the earrings in 1954. 1954 In the 1954 photo above I think that the large bracelet is the same as the one in photo of Edith, Marchioness of Londonderry wearing the large pink topaz brooch in 1952. 1952
