QEQM at the Royal Variety Performance in 1968 Posted by Franck on March 7, 2020, 2:00 am Dear all, I would like to share with you this photo of QEQM at the Royal Variety Performance in 1968. She was wearing the Greville tiara, the the Greville diamond earrings, the Duchess of teck's flower brooch and two diamond collet necklaces : - her coronation necklace ; - the "Duchess of York's diamond collet necklace". I am particularly amazed by the size of the diamonds in this necklace ! I do hope that one day this necklace will be worn by the Duchess of Cambridge (never after the death of QEQM). This is an interesting photo for a number of reasons: neither Princess Margaret or Princess Anne was wearing a tiara, despite QEQM wearing one. But what caught my eye the most was the difference in how the diamond rivieres photographed. QEQM's own coronation gift necklace looks dull. From that I suspect that the diamonds are not as fine a quality as those in "Duchess of York" collet necklace, the earrings and the tiara.

Here's another photo from the same occasion which also gives a better view of the brooch: not the Duchess of Teck's flower brooch, but Queen Victoria's diamond fringe brooch.

The longer riviere look like the Spanish reviere worn by Queen Sophia, but the stones in the one featured look slightly larger. I always wondered if this riviere is or could be one of the ones worn by QM and if it may have been designed in a way in which it could be added to or shortened. I would definitely like to see HM wear this necklace or maybe the DoCorn. Regards, Dave. QEQM's coronation gift necklace Posted by Beth on March 9, 2020, 4:48 pm, in reply to "Re: QEQM at the Royal Variety Performance in 1968 ...second riviere pearls or diamonds" The lower, larger diamond necklace which Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother was wearing in the photos posted by Franck and Mauriz is commonly referred to as her coronation gift necklace. It was given to her by George VI as a coronation gift. Hugh Roberts documented it in The Queen's Diamonds page 224. It initially had 40 collets and since HM's death inherited by the Queen who has since lent it to the Duchess of Cornwall. The Duchess, according to Roberts, has had the necklace shortened to 31 diamonds. Our fellow poster, The Royal Watcher, has an interesting item on it.
