Queen Elizabeth the QueenMother. Garnets Posted by Beth on March 27, 2020, 7:47 am From time to time I have stumbled upon items noting that Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother wore garnets in the late 1930s. For example December 1936 January 1937 -- virtually a repeat of above. July 1937 Has anyone ideas about what these garnets might be?

The newspaper, The Age of Melbourne, is a very reputable paper and, while the writer may not have seen QEQM personally wearing the garnets, the paper drew on reputable sources.

I had forgotten about that set. Unless, the pendant detaches and can be worn as a brooch, I doubt if QEQM would have worn the set during the day and with tweed fabric clothing, so I agree with Franck that it is unlikely.

Opal and diamonds " Franck, the various reports in the Australian press of QEQM wearing a large opal brooch during the tour turned out to be the brooch from the turquoise parure which George V gave her as a wedding gift. (A couple of press reports got it correct and stated it was a turquoise) For years, I assumed the brooch had an opal, but you pointed out some time ago that it was the turquoise. QEQM wore it to the Opening of Parliament in Canberra. A closer view What has always intrigued me is the brooch HM wore for a visit to Mt Cootha in Brisbane. It has a large central stone. I don't think we have ever identified it.

However, she was given a large opal brooch during the tour in Australia (Press articles). I think that the Duchess of York was wearing the opal brooch for the visit to Mt Cootha in Brisbane.
