Queen Ratna of Nepal's Tiaras Posted by Tiara Mania on August 20, 2020, 3:27 am I've been researching Nepalese tiaras recently and today is Queen Ratna's 92nd birthday so I thought we could look at her tiaras. So far I've found six different tiaras worn by her but I haven't been able to find any information about any of them except that the diamond palmette tiara is now on display at the Narayanhiti Palace Museum. As Saad from The Royal Watcher already posted about here that probably means that it is owned by the state. I only have one picture of the first two tiaras being worn but the interesting thing here is that Queen Ratna is wearing the same necklace with and without emerald drops. Then next is the diamond palmette tiara. This seems to be her most worn tiara and it also the most important as it's the one she wore at her husband's coronation. State Visit to the UK in 1960 - The first picture is from a dinner at the Nepalese Embassy and the second picture is from Covent Garden. Visit from the UK in 1961 For a portrait This is another tiara that I just have the one picture of. The other jewelry she's wearing are pearls so it's possible the tiara also contains pearls. The last two were worn during the State Visit to the Netherlands in 1967. The emerald tiara and matching jewels for the state banquet on April 25th and then a diamond tiara with pearl jewelry for a dinner at the Rijksmuseum on April 26th. I've taken to calling the second one the diamond wave tiara to differentiate it from her diamond palmette tiara. After her husband passed away in 1972, Queen Ratna stopped wearing tiaras and other grand jewelry. Her diamond palmette tiara, emerald tiara, and diamond wave tiara were all worn by Queen Aishwarya and her emerald tiara was also worn by Queen Komal.

It is a whole new world for me! As Queen Ratna was a member of the wealthy Rana family, I wonder if the jewels were financed by her family? But I doubt if information like that will ever be released.

One question - are you certain there are two different tiaras in the two first pictures of a young Queen Ratna? Could they not be the same tiara, only the black and white picture makes it look different? I am speaking of the two pictures where you have identified she is wearing the same necklace only once with emeralds. The one on the left kind of looks like rectangular elements and doesn't continue as far back and the one the right is more fringe-y. Beth, it's very possible that some of her jewelry came from the Rana family. From the pictures I have seen they wore a lot of jewelry but I haven't been able to find any pictures of the women in Queen Ratna's immediate family to try to trace some of the pieces.

From what I know the Rana family was (and perhaps till is) much more wealthy than the royal family. But, I very much doubt if we will ever get confirmation of how the jewels were acquired -- or even who made them. Amongst my memories of Katmandu and the areas surrounding it, are the numerous, exquisite Italianate palaces built by various members of the Rana family. But, even during the late 1960s and the early 1970s some of those were either in foreign hands or, at least, rented to foreign businesses.

It is so interesting to see jewels which is not so frequently talked about. And it is a shame that we are not able to get more information about the wonderful collections in the Asian royal houses - like for instance Nepal. They seem to have had quite a lot of glitter at their disposal. And in Malaysia it seems like these grand jewels are worn even on a more frequently scale than in Europe these days, and with them actually adding to their collections is hopefully a good sign that we will continue to see more glitter from this part of the world. As for the similarities of the tiaras worn in the two first pictures of Tiara Mania's thread: I also thought that they might actually be the same piece, but after having looked more closely at them I could only conclude that they are not the same (as Tiara Mania explained).
