Queen Mary Tiaras
Posted by 992234177 on October 12, 2020, 10:16 am
I was wondering how many tiaras Queen Mary had at her disposal to wear. I apologise for any mistakes that I have probably made.
I’m including items I think she was able to wear even if we don’t know she did. I’m excluding the tiara Princess Mary wore to the coronation since I don’t know it’s history and I’m excluding the turquoise tiara that she gave QEQM since I think she might have bought it. I’m also not counting in the tally items she broke up. Could you please add any that you think I have missed.
Thanks

A great list 992234177!
Can I say, I appreciated how you distinguished between tiaras which Queen Mary dismantled and reused the gemstones. That really helped me.
Apologies for such a late reply 992234177 (and everyone). I have had a few busy days.
Other tiaras which I think Queen Mary had.
Perhaps these are not all strictly speaking tiaras, and I should simply say head jewels. (I am excluding photos where it seems that Queen Mary is wearing a single brooch as a head jewel)
1. An aigrette on a base -- years ago posters on the RJWMB identified this as a ruby jewel.
From a different angle.
2. Another head jewel photographed in Melbourne, Australia 1901.
Arthur from the RJWMB worked out that the base was the same as the jewel holding the aigrette seen above. I think he also identified the brooch, but I can no longer remember or find the thread.
3. I have always believed that the head jewel seen in the painting below is not part of the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara -- but others disagree.

Thanks for that especially the Australian one. I think the last image might be the girls purely based on the errors of what looks like the Gloucester Choker but a bit wrong. It’s a bit like a combination of the girls and the infanta Alicia Calabria tiara.
A° Queen Mary wore on least several hair ornaments :
- Honeysuckle ornament ; (From Nellie) ; - Stars brooches (made to do the choker) ; - the aigrette with pear-shaped pearls and diamonds in the form of a bouquet of forget-me knots. (photos from the royal Magazin) - The feather diamond aigrette which was given to her by her groom Prince George ; (photos from the royal Magazin)
B° To answer Beth :
- The head jewel photographed in Melbourne : the central brooch is the diamond rose brooch (in the vault)
- The pearl and diamond tiara may be the one worn by Princess Anne ???
C° From the jewels known by us :
Only one msytery : the laurel leaves tiara which was worn by QM and PM (maybe the one given as a wedding gift by the King of Italy).
We now know where are the other tiaras (including the lozenge tiara which must be in the vault -worn by Princess Margaret in 1965)
