Tudor and Stuart Jewels Posted by Sam (The Beau Monde) on October 12, 2020, 6:31 pm I stumbled across this vide on YouTube last night by one of my favourite channels: Around the 3.55 mark, he starts talking about a jewel called the Three Brothers: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Brothers_(jewel) This of course lead me down a very long rabbit hole because I find the jewels of the British Monarchs before the Civil War fascinating. Both Elizabeth I and James VI wore the jewel, either as a pendant or as a hat ornament. share image I was wondering if anyone knew anymore about the jewel or any other famous pieces from before 1643. I've heard of the Mirror of Portugal and the Mirror of Naples but I would be fascinated to learn more.

Sapphires were historically unpopular. The tudors favoured rubies and then emeralds.

I have a recollection of reading somewhere that the pearls which dangle from the British Imperial State Crown are from Elizabeth I. Or am I incorrect? Is there is a pearl necklace which it is said to have belonged to Mary, Queen of Scots?? What of the Cheapside Hoard jewels? If my memory is correct they are today in the Museum of London -- but I could be incorrect - I haven't checked.

One is owned by the a Duke of Norfolk and is made of Freshwater river Tay pearls https://pin.it/7cXUfTZ And a second and the Seton necklace in the royal collection https://www.rct.uk/collection/65620/parure-with-necklace-brooch-and-earrings. There is also a rosary and a crucifix at Arundel Castle with the Tay necklace. One of them is owned by the duke and the other was owned by Lady Herries and is a Herries heirloom. Bernard Duke of Norfolk married Lady Herries but had no sons so his daughters inherited the lordship but not the Howard titles. I think Norfolk owns the rosary and Herries owns the crucifix but I am not sure. They are usually referred to as one item but they are separate. One of them was given to Anne Dacre Countess of Arundel wife of st Philip Howard at her execution. https://pin.it/oBhsh9F

Elizabeth I definitely bought a strands of pearls from the collection of Mary Queen of Scots after she was imprisoned but so much of Elizabeth’s jewels, dresses etc were broken down by the Stuart’s after her death. I remember reading somewhere that James I gave some to his daughter when she became Queen of Bohemia but she too was deposed. I’m currently working on an article about the Spencer Necklace which is supposed to feature some of these pearls. As for the Cheapside Hoard, they are in the Museum of London but they are not on display. One or two pieces are on display in the British Museum but these are the enamelled chains Shaun Leane did a fascinating documentary on the Hoard for the BBC and it is available on YouTube. Again, even the documentary states that it is hard to date the hoard but it could definitely be pre Civil War as they found a small carnelian signet stamp belonging to Viscount Stafford created in 1640

It's quite a fascinating piece of jewellery!!

So interesting as Elizabeth is recorded as only mentioning her mother twice in her life. But she was such an important figure, especially in British History and I think that’s where Elizabeth got her formidable intelligence from.

I wonder if it was collected by the owners of Chequers who restored the house and then donated the estate to the nation so that the incumbent Prime Minister had a suitable rural retreat?

Central to the novel is the story of the Three Brothers. It's about the obsessive fascination people have for gemstones. It's a good read.
