Princess Alexandra of Kent in Canada 1967 - brooch Posted by Kongetro on November 27, 2020, 4:51 am Hi all, I came across this photo of Princess Alexandra attending an event during her visit to Canada in 1967. By the looks of it she wears the Ogilvy tiara with turquoises together with turquoise earrings. What caught my attention though was the brooch. I suspect that this also contains turquoises, but I cannot say that I have seen a front view of this brooch. Has anybody seen her wear this brooch again? I have also seen two other photos from gala events during this visit, but in these she seems to be wearing different brooches. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. I remember it being discussed but I don't think we ever reached a conclusion.

She could have set the tiara with turquoises because that was what she had then to use and as such she thought it was a good idea to borrow the necklace from her aunt as it would make a good match for that event. Because I do think that it is the same necklace worn by the Duchesses of Gloucester. It would be very strange to have two exactly identical necklaces within the family. Diamond would be a good change but turquoise seems unusual. If she had spare money she might but otherwise it seems a bit extravagant. On the other hand it would explain why her jubilee necklace was altered to take turquoise’s. If you had a piece like that a matching tiara would be useful as you wouldn’t wear it at informal events.

As far as I can see the tiara, as initially worn by Princess Alexandra, was set with turquoises, and it is only later that photos of the tiara with pearls are seen. When Princess Alexandra first wore the tiara to her pre-wedding ball at Windsor Castle, it was set with turquoises. Even though the media said only that she wore a diamond tiara, the photos clearly show that the Princess was wearing the turquoise earrings. Her dress, according to the media, was white. 1963 Pre wedding ball 1963 Pre wedding ball In June 1964 Princess Alexandra again wore the turquoise version for a return banquet given by the President of Sudan. Unfortunately, it is not possible to see what necklace she was wearing. In January 1965 Princess Alexandra was photographed wearing the pearl version of the tiara to the Premiere of My Fair Lady Leslie Field states that Angus Ogilvy gave the Princess an identical copy of Queen Victoria's Jubilee necklace (minus the crown) as a wedding gift, that it initially contained pearls and was later adapted to take turquoises. Yet, strangely this necklace does not appear in photos which I can date until 1967 (but there is one possibly exception which I will show below) 1967 at Premiere of Casino Royale Some where on the net I found the photo below which is dated 1965; however, I have not been able to verify the date through any of the photo agency archives. In 1968 the Princess wore the necklace, tiara and earrings in the turquoise version for an official banquet at the Guildhall. If Princess Alexandra borrowed the Gloucester turquoise drop necklace for the Chamber of Commerce ball in Paris in May 1965, then I suspect that it was because she didn't then possess the necklace which resembles Queen Victoria's.

It's not necessary to all the time having to plan the gown around one certain colour, but by changing the coloured gem you have so many more options. As for the State Visit from Sudan.. The earliest instance I've seen of Princess Alexandra wearing the Necklace with Pearls was at the Premiere of 'The Countess from Hong Kong' in January 1967, and later at the Premiere of Lord Mountbatten: A Man for the Century in 1968.

Princess Alexandra. Early version of her tiara. Posted by Beth on November 30, 2020, 6:56 pm, in reply to "Re: Princess Alexandra of Kent in Canada 1967 - brooch" Before what we now refer to as the Ogilvy tiara was constructed, Princess Alexandra wore a tiara formed of the floral elements arranged on a band. Most commentators refer to the tiara as having 5 flowers. I believe that there were 7 elements. So far the images I have found of Princess Alexandra wearing this tiara are from her trip to Nigeria in 1960 when she represented the Queen at the Independence ceremonies. The tour lasted 3 weeks and so Princess Alexandra wore 3 tiaras: the Kent festoon tiara, the Queen Mary/Kent bandeau and Princess Alexandra's own tiara with the 7 floral elements. None of the photos I have found show the details of the tiara clearly; nevertheless, I strongly suspect that the floral elements had the turquoise centres, not pearl centres. Princess Alexandra wore the tiara on at least 2 separate occasions in Nigeria in 1960. I would be interested in hearing what others think about this tiara. I think that this image shows the turquoise earrings. Detail Detail A coloured photo. 2nd occasion when this tiara was worn in Nigeria in 1960 I suspect that the original elements contained turquoises and that the pearls seen in the Ogilvy tiara were, like the sapphires, a later addition.

It could be the turquoise brooch from my original post, but something tells me that it is not. Though, as I said, I have not been able to make up my mind about it still. The photos are probably as clear as we will get them, but still it is too blurry for my eyes to distiguish the brooch worn by the Princess in them.
