Queen Victoria's Jubilee necklace
Posted by J-F on January 17, 2022, 2:51 am
Hello and Happy New Year to everyone.
I think Queen Mary may have worn parts of Queen Victoria's Jubilee necklace at some point.
Here, Queen Mary may had worn the central part (minus the top crown) as a brooch.
In the picture above, The Queen wore what it seems to be the earrings gifted with the necklace, and two of the necklace elements pinned to her hat.
I have kept looking at the photos to make sure that my eye isn't deceiving me with wishful thinking.
J-F's great find may help solve a couple of mysteries I have had as per the two photos below.
With the benefit of J-F's insight, I think Queen Mary may have worn parts of the necklace as brooches.
Photo one.
I suspect that HM wore the centre portion of the necklace at her throat in the photo below and one of the next size elements in the centre of her dress. I know that the photo is very faint but, when enlarged, it is possible to see a faint outline of a brooch at her throat.
Photo 2
I am not sure what the Queen wore at her throat, as the photo is too indistinct, but I think that she is wearing one of the smaller elements of the necklace in the centre of her bodice.
I think that on your first photo, the Queen wore that very brooch on her collar + at least one smaller necklace piece on her bodice.
On your second photo, not sure about the collar brooch but I think you are right about the small bodice brooch.
Thanks for these 2 photos that I've never seen before.
Maybe Queen Mary simply didn't appreciate the complete necklace in its original form ?
Have a nice evening !

I suspect that, despite wearing a great many jewels at once, Queen Mary may have found the design of the necklace, as a necklace, clashed with her sense of what jewels suited her best. Apart from when she wore the Cambridge sapphires, Queen Mary, after she became Queen, kept to relatively simple clean lines with regard to necklaces.
