Royal Family Order of George VI, 1937 Posted by DavoST on March 25, 2023, 9:38 pm King Edward VIII did not have time to introduce a Family Order udring his short reign. Whether he started to commissioned badges before the abdication is not known. However his successor, his brother George VI most certainly did, and like his regnal name, these were bosed upon his Father's. Royal Service, Volume II notes: "King George VI's Family Order was suspended from a pink watered ribbon the same width as that of his father but only made in the two sizes. Two Large and five smaller badges were supplied by Garrard in May 1937 an the first presentations were made by the King at a family lunch at Buckinham Palace two days before the coronation." Page 36. A list of those appointed (seven in 1937 and one in 1951) is printed on page 43. Page 34 reproduces photographs of the front and back of the badge that was presented to HRH The Duchess of Gloucester. While the badge of the George V Family Order were surrounded by round "brilliant cut" diamonds, George VI's badges were surrounded by 16 "brilliant cut" diamonds in pairs, seperated by 8 rectangular "baguette cut" diamonds.

I am going to answer in two posts. First 1937 coronation. At 1937 Coronation Queen Elizabeth does not wear any order sash (I thought maybe the garter itself above her elbow, but can't see it in any images) indeed no orders at all excepting the braclets of Willian IV's family order. Queen Mary was wearing her garter sash. Queen Maude is wearing the GCVO sash, which she recieved in the Coronation Honours list 1937. It makes an interesting read. Also awarded the GCVO that day were Mary, Princess Royal and Countess of Harewood, Princess Louise, Duchess of Argyll & Princess Beatrice. (Although the last two, the last surviving of Queen Victoria's daughters, did not attend the 1937 coronation) Therefore Princess Mary, Princess Royal is wearing her new GCVO sash. HOWEVER, she was wearing her diamond encrusted GBE star instead of the GCVO one. She did the same in 1953, as can be seen in the following photo. The Duchesses of Gloucester and Kent, and Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone received the GBE in the 1937 Coronation honours list (see that link above). So they wore that sash. The Duchesses of Gloucester and Kent, and Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone received the GCVO in te 1948 New Year's honours list. See this link to George VI's appointments to the GCVO. As mentioned below, only seven badges were produced in 1937. Of the four mentioned by Vickers, only two attended the 1937 Coronation, Queen Maude of Norway - the King's Aunt - and Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone - the King's first cousin once removed and Aunt. Both wore the Royal Family Order of King George V, but not King George VI. Queen Maude of Norway. Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone. The other royals at the 1937 Coronation with George V's Family Order that did not receive that of George VI were Lady Patricia Ramsay, Princess Arthur of Connaught, Duchess of Fife, and Maud Carnegie, Countess of Southesk. Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, wearing the badge of George VIs Family Order, in the carriage following her husband coffin in the procession to St George's Chapel. Queen Elizabeth II shakes hands with the Dean of Windsor after the funeral service for her father. Her Majesty and her sister Princess Margaret are wearing their George VI Family Order badges. I was saddened that the royal ladies did not wear the EII Royal Family Order to the late Queen's funeral. Maybe they did for the private cerermony when the coffin was interred in the King George VI chapel later that day.
