A 75 carat Romanov emerald but who did it belong to? Posted by Janet on May 8, 2023, 5:43 am Sold in 1971, the description in the catalogue describes it as belonging to Tsar Alexander II which doesn't really address what happened to it after his death, had it remained in the main line surely it would have referenced Nicholas II? So presumably it passed to one of Tsar Alexander's younger children, including his illegitimate branch. Any ideas?

After GD Vladimir's death it was sold and ended up in the Rockefeller family. It resurfaced a few years ago at Christie's.

Oh I remember that, it had been recut hadn't it? They didn't know about the Vladimir connection when they first marketed it, I remembered the excitement when it was reported they made the Romanov connection. It had been reset in a rather dull modern necklace. So this was originally set in a brooch, said to have belonged to Catherine the Great . Grand Duke Boris gave it to his morganatic after his mother Grand Duchess Vladimir died.
