Ambulance Donations

As most of you know, we now have a new gas-engine ambulance ready to serve our community! Purchasing the ambulance was just the first step in the process. Now we need to give refresher training to our team, buy insurance, pay for plates, and restock the ambulance, and more. We're working on all those things this week. Many people have asked me how they can donate to this huge project. I am at Otra Vez every Monday from 10-1. You can give your donations to me directly. Or you can take your donations to Mayan at La Manzanilla Homes, 26 Maria Asunción. She will give you a receipt for your donation. Thank you so much for inquiring about donations. Only a suggestion but it might be time to inform your readers more about the history and specifics regarding the new rig. Give us a budget to work towards and anticipates expenses. Some of us worked on the original dream with Dan (rip) and have seen a lot of fun raising since the beginning, what happened to all the equipment, crew and related support. I for one would like to see this endeavour succeed however, we have been down this dusty road several times and now we are questioning where we are going and what it will take to get there.

Wow! That's a tall order, Erin, but you're right. I should take the time to write to everyone what's happening. I just wanted to have a few more things settled before I felt I was ready. I have a meeting with Fercho, president of La Huerta. They are the ones who handle our contract and decide what services they will provide for us. That happens on Thursday. The diesel ambulance is still sitting at a mechanic shop in Colima. I'm working on arranging a grua to bring it back here, and nobody calls you back. I wanted to have a few more things done before I reported. I also wanted to have refresher training started first, but I'm having trouble nailing down dates. Big quinceañera this weekend. Most of the crew will be there. Me too! So please, give me a bit more time to get a clearer picture, and I'll be happy to tell all. By the way, Mayan is our board treasurer and keeps all the financial records and call reports. She can show you what we have. Another thing to keep in mind is that this is the time for fundraising, when everyone is here. So it seems like a lot is going on community wide, lots of hands out, trying to make enough money to last through the off season.

I was not trying to be difficult but having been on this trip what seems like a very long time, my only thought is, thank god I have not needed the services of a dead ambulance. But your initial post might have been a bit premature but I did not that there was more to follow with regards to information. We will await your words of wisdom and good luck with your meetings. I am sure it would be nice to see this turned over to another governing body who will take up the chase for consistancy, funding and training. I can appreciate what a huge job and task this entire project has been and I don't envy you and thank you for hanging in there. You do have the support of the community.

Jeanne, thanks for your amazing efforts over the years to keep the idea alive. Erin makes a good point that financial and staffing plans are needed. Donors that have given $ and equipment in the past, only to hear that the ambulance is broken or in La Huerta, are donor weary and wary about contributing again without a game plan. Is the ambulance committee alive? Contact me if you can use some help

Thanks for your post, Bruce. I'm actually on my way to meet with the president in La Huerta in just a few minutes. Yes, people want to know what's going on. I understand that. I'll know more after my meting with Fercho and after we retrieve the diesel ambulance from Colima. Right now we have 4 team members who will be starting refresher training next week. We could use more, but I didn't get any response to my post asking for interested people. Our board is still intact, and we will be meeting once a few more things are settled. Do you have any interest in serving on the board? Or do you know anyone who would like to be trained for the ambulance team?

High school kids????

Jeanne, I'm wondering whether there is an age limit and time commitment issue in volunteering to be trained ... thinking that there may be some high school students who would be interested provided that they could work it around their academic week.
Just a thought.

Jo Anna, Sometimes when we go out on calls, what we find can be pretty gruesome--blood and guts and even death. I just don't think high school kids should be exposed to these images. Even one of our adult members of the team quit after a client had a heart attack and died. It was too much to handle.

Hi Jeanne: I don't know how you do it, continuing to tilt at those windmills but I do believe that the new GAS ambulance will cure the problems of the last two ambulances and the windmills will start to teeter and fall. Certainly with all your tenacity, they will. I appreciate all the work you have done and continue to do. If you're reading this, Jeanne has posted a long, detailed report (Ambulance Information) on this board and it's well worth the read. If Jeanne can stick to this, we can surely help to support her.
