Screwworm in dogs

I just found information about screwworm in MX and the requirements for returning to the states with a dog. Has anyone traveled recently with your dog by plane? Has this certification been necessary?

From what I’m reading, a regular veterinarian would not be qualified to provide this document. I suppose a local vet could refer one to the needed specialist. Seems like PV and Guad would be our closest choices.

Some local vets are working on their certification. Andres in Barra has completed the first of 3 training sessions, Beto in Melaque can refer you to another vet in Manzanillo. There have been people refused boarding by Alaska Air who didn’t have the proper paperwork. It’s only required if traveling to or through the US, direct flights to Canada are not affected.

There’s also a certified vet in Colima. Vets without the certification are able to do video conferences with their certified colleagues. This from a recent Facebook post: Carol Mifsud , just an update on my friend's brother's dog who was denied yesterday. My friend spoke with the only VET in PV Dr. Carlos Martinez and he has a colleague in Colima who did a video conference with Dr. Martinez. Her brother got the certificate, and they will be flying out on Monday on Alaska.

A trip to Colima is a lot simpler than PV or Guadalajara.

I was told that Beto in Melaque can refer you to a colleague in Jaluco who is certified. My understanding is that you have to go through Beto to get to the cetified vet in Jaluco.

We talked to an assistant in Beto's office this week. We were told that Beto can make an appointment with a vet in Manzanillo. I asked if we will need to take a feces sample and was told no, the vet will have to inspect our dog. If anyone goes through this process, it would be nice if they post their experience so we can know what to expect and be prepared.

Canada does not require screw worm certificate. Only if you’re stopping in the US on Alaska Air or other US airlines.

My understanding, through a bit of Google research, is that these worms infect wounds on your dog. If your dog has no cuts, wounds, etc, they will "pass the inspection." So no feces or urine samples are required. I believe you can make your appointment directly with the vet in Manzanillo.Beto is not required.

I confirmed this week that Animal Care in Manzanillo will issue the health certificate. Appointment required.

I spoke to the vet in Melaque today: VETERINARIA EL GRANERO. He does the certification as well, in fact he's the one who does the certification in Manzanillo.

Bumping this post, anyone with first hand travel experience this past week? Lots of people heading north with their pets now so hoping for an update.

Mexico published their latest list of vets on March 13 and the local ones are still not listed (doesn’t mean their certificates haven’t been accepted at the airport though).

I spoke yesterday to one of the vets mentioned in the chain above. While not confirmed by any recent travelers, he informed me that the US requirements for a dog to travel back to the US include: Health Certificate, Chip, Rabies shot at least one month BEFORE traveling back and
screw worm certificate WITHIN 5 DAYS OF TRAVEL. Appointments to this vet are required. They can be reached at: Arana.petcenter@hotmail.com and their English is excellent. They are in Manzanillo.

Thanks, Joni. To clarify: do you mean to say screwworm certificate needs to be dated within 5 days before crossing into USA (not merely “travel”)? Timing is essential for those of us who drive from here to the border. Thanks.

Hi Mary Beth--I imagine it is within 5 days of crossing into the US. I didnt ask that question as I am flying. But, if you email them, they will answer quickly.
