How to register your Mexican phone number
Posted by mpaget on March 16, 2026, 9:42 am
Just some guidance for those who have Mexican phone numbers. There is a recently enacted law in Mexico that all phone numbers must be linked to a person, so you most likely have received messages saying something like, "Recuerda que tu debes vincular tu linea antes del 30-06-2026..."
You have a few options for how to keep your phone number: 1) If you have Mexican ID and a CURP number, you can do to the Telcel store here in La Manzanilla and they will do the linking for you. 2) If you don't have Mexican ID and a CURP number, you can go with your phone and passport to a Telcel CLient Service Center in Manzanillo and they will do it for you. 3) You can go with a Mexican friend, with their Mexican ID and CURP number to the Telcel store here in town and they will use that person's info to ID your phone. 4) You can do it online with your phone by clicking on the link in the text message, then click on the link on the webpage where it says "...en linea aqui (Modalidad Remota). Choose "foreign passport" and it will give you instructions in English to fill in the form, capture a photo of your passport, and capture photos of your face.
The online method worked great for me, hopefully this will help some folks! Be sure to do it before June this year.
Also, it gives you a "CURP" number which may or may not be usable for online purchases that require a CURP...we shall see.
I went to our local Telcel office today. The gal there said she could NOT register my Mexican cell number, even after I told her I had my CURP number. I was told to go to the Manzanillo office.
I tried to register my cel number online many times with no success. We finally registered it when we were at the main Telcel office in Manzanillo. Passport of the person whose name is on the account is required, nothing more.
There are no 'local Telcel office' in La Manz, Melaque or Barra. There are authorised sellers but it is not the same. They donot have acces to all the system and files. That is only in Manzanillo next to Soriana.
The other is that don't count on using a friend's name and ID. There are limits to how many phones a person can have registered to them (I think it is 10) and then they are responsible legally for your phone number and anything illicit that it may be used for should it come to that, so a lot of people won't want that responsibility.Dan Flip Flop Nomad Tours
