West Nile

The Grundy County Health Department has reported cases of West Nile Virus from mosquitoes collected in Channahon, Illinois, on May 19, 2025.

Looks like any venue in that area should be closed this year and we definitely should not be allowing athletes to practice outdoors or have any tournaments this summer in Channahon. This is about safety not money. This information was sent out by www.grundyhealth.com

Those fields off route 6 are near a river and are a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Do the right thing.

Not sure a money grab cuts any girls? They are begging for coaches and players... show me the money must be their motto. Maybe at least pay your coaches for hotels and gas? Come on, if a kid gets cut from that place... really?

As someone who actually has work experience in this field. Mosquitos test positive for West Nile every year. Usually later in the summer, but it’s a common and expected occurrence. Mosquito traps are collected and tested to monitor rates of West Nile in the area.

The vast majority of people who contract West Nile will have no symptoms or minor flu like symptoms. Most who develop symptoms will think they’re just sick and not know they had West Nile unless they went to the hospital and were tested. There is no reason to shut down practices and tournaments because mosquito traps tested positive. Follow basic safety precautions and use mosquito repellant.

West Nile virus is potentially anywhere as are mosquitoes. Shutting down the area is not a solution. Educate people, support county programs for mosquito control and use bug repellent.
