Hours each week

Any advice for my baby girl? I think the coaches are going over the hour limit, my child “Jane Doe” who attends a region school for softball has three practices a week, for more than two hours each day, and is restricted to what she can eat? THIS IS ABSOLUTE 🐂🐂🐂🐂!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😡😡😡😡 As a parent I want a coaching staff that allows balance with ACADEMICS and extracurriculars. If my daughter does not go to practice because of medical issues or any extracurriculars, she will be held accountable. I REBUKE this type of energy!!!!!!!!!

Freshman year is rough. Figuring out the time management is a challenge. DD thought she’d have it easy since she played 3 sports in high school and it was still difficult. If you’re not in the gym more than your team activities as a freshman you are likely not going to play unless you’re just naturally exceptional. The upper classmen are likely bigger faster and stronger than you. I’d say dd put in 60 hrs a week between softball and school. She didn’t party much but she had friends and did have a life. She did well academically but not perfect in the spring….adjusting to the travel was hard.

There are rules and then there are rules.

Yes, the NCAA limits the time. My daughter's team has "optional" sessions.

Playing on the field is optional too, if you catch my drift.

From what I can tell most programs get around the NCAA rules by having player / coaches that are running events for the team. As long as a documented coach is not in attendance, it is a volunteery activity, that is how they get around the hours.

I might not be remembering correctly, but I believe my youngest could go and hit with a coach outside of scheduled practice time. Not sure if it was legit, but pretty sure it happened.

In-Season (During the Playing Season):

Weekly Limit: A maximum of 20 hours per week.

Daily Limit: A maximum of 4 hours per day.

Required Day Off: Student-athletes must have at least one calendar day off per week.

Competition Day: A day of competition, along with any associated activities, counts as 3 hours, regardless of the actual duration.

No Practice After Competition: No practice activities may be held after a competition, except between contests in a multi-day or multi-event competition (e.g., a doubleheader).

No Missed Class: No class time can be missed for practice activities unless the team is traveling to an away contest and the practice is in conjunction with the contest.

Preseason Exception: The daily and weekly hour limitations do not apply to countable athletically related activities that occur during preseason practice before the first day of classes or the first scheduled contest, whichever comes first.

Off-Season (During the Academic Year):

Weekly Limit: A maximum of 8 hours per week.

Skill Instruction: Of the 8 hours, no more than 2 hours per week can be spent on individual skill workouts.

Required Days Off: Student-athletes must have at least two calendar days off per week.

It is important to note that these are the general rules. Specific regulations can vary slightly, and institutions and conferences may have their own additional policies. "Countable athletically related activities" include things like practice, competition, team meetings, required conditioning, and film review. "Voluntary" activities, initiated solely by the student-athlete without any requirement or supervision from a coach, do not count towards these limits.

I'm assuming your kid is not on a ride; if so, this is exactly what you signed up for. Softball programs keep logs, which are reviewed by the administration and the NCAA, restricting the amount of time they can practice. Most decent schools have nutrition programs, which are great for the girls and help them develop as athletes. The programs are judged on academics, and most monitor academic progress and have tutors and study halls available. They also have a staff that monitors medical issues so that no legitimate medical issue will cause her punishment.

Your daughter has a choice to make. Nobody is making her play softball, and now that she knows what it entails, maybe she needs to get out to pursue her extracurriculars instead of being an athlete.

Of course, what will happen is you'll run off to the AD claiming abuse, prompting a time-wasting investigation that will eventually find the coaches within guidelines. You and your family will become even more toxic and try to find other disgruntled families, blah, blah. You're exactly why people give up on coaching.

I think they are referring to a high school team and maybe the coach should quit. They need to look in the mirror and ask why their team isn’t winning championships instead of focusing on their clearly conditioned team’s diet 🥱
