There has been lots of coverage of Cannady’s $1MM deal at Texas Tech, but there doesn’t seem to be any other information about what other D1 compensation ranges look like. So, what’s the real story?
I assume this is mostly only relevant to P4, and most extensive in the SEC. What ranges are we talking about, and what are staffs being given by their ADs to work with?
To clarify, I’m not talking about the value of tuition, lodging or books and fees. I’m curious about (a) monies paid directly from schools to players, as now allowed as part of the $20.5M annual compensation pool per the House vs. NCAA settlement and (b) NIL deals outside of the university, whether they be from collectives, brands or local businesses.
The House settlement used a model of 80/10/5/5 - 80% football, 10% men’s basketball, 5% women’s basketball and 5% everyone else. But schools can decide what they want to do (e.g., they could give 100% to football for the time being, until a Title IX lawsuit or Congressional decision impacts).
So, 5% of $20.5MM is $1.025MM. If that’s the standard allocation at the top end, what do we think schools are giving softball? Does Gasso get $500,000 from OU? Does Perry get $50,000 from UI? Do Gasso’s players get another $500,000 from businesses and collectives (dollars she presumably influences…).
Even public schools seem to be fighting any disclosure on these payments, so it seems to be a total black budget currently. I know different schools prioritize different sports, but does anyone have any reputable information to share?

1. Alston Money went away…7k a year that every athlete with a scholarship over 10% in the P4 received 2. Some kids were converted to full rides with COA …about 6500. This was a net loss for many players if they were already on a full combo ride because COA is less than Alston. For others this may have been a net win if they were using Alston to pay room and board. 3. No Rev share individually at KY, Purdue, IU that I’ve heard so far.
I haven't heard from any of the players my kids played with getting any significant money. She's Big Ten, and there's really nothing going on with her team either. I'm sure it happens for some, but I'm guessing it's less frequent than you'd think.
My current P4 player is not receiving any significant NIL or Rev share and neither are any of her teammates. Shes any every day player and expected to be a major contributor this season.
The only people getting significant money are pitchers on the top teams and major role playing hitters. You are talking maybe 30 players in the league. Im sure thats why the pitcher from Belmont ended up going back after dipping her toes in the portal. Not a large enough paycheck for her to make the move.
