What's the point?

I understand if you get significant scholarship funds, but it seems like over half the programs out there are just going to get their asses kicked every year. How do players motivate when there's really no hope? At least in travel, you're playing for the scholly.

There kids who are playing for lower tier programs to get their education paid for in a field they are interested in. They are not leaving college with a mountain of student loan debt. They have a degree that can possibly give them a solid career with an earning potential for the rest of their lives after college. They know the NIL money is available only for a very few.

So... They are still playing for the scholly when they get to college.

The problem is most of them get discouraged with the lack of offers when others are verbally committing. I see it every year, and it’s a shame.

I don't know if I agree with this claim. We all know that that total winning percentage of all teams combined needs to add up to .500, right?

In 2024, 83 teams were below .400 and 43 teams were below .300.

In 2025, 89 teams were below .400 and 45 teams were below .300.

There are 292 NCAA D1 softball programs.

But I get it that if your kid isn't happy, nothing can make it feel better...

Some of these kids are playing for money. I am not saying that it is a super high percentage of kids that are getting NIL money in softball but there is money to be made if you are in that top tier.

I am guessing almost every kid on the roster at a school like Oklahoma, Texas, Texas Tech is getting some kind of NIL money.

In reality there are less than 20 schools that have any type of shot at winning the WCWS.

These parents lost it these days. Everyone thinks their kid is the best. My next life I’m going to open a huge facility and do privates and make millions. These parents are spending crazy money on their kids it’s great.
But to your post, yeah it sucks for some kids just going D1 just to say they’re playing a sport that’s D1. This is why the portal is ridiculous now. After 4 years of college you’re done.
Now let’s hear all the nutty parents comment, oh o bet your kid sucks. Blah blah blah. Come up with a new line.

You're bending the narrative to meet your opinion. Kids lose at every level. Keep in mind there are kids that just love to play the game, and have friendships a team provides. Not everyone is playing for a natty. Some are playing for personal growth.
