Apparently it takes getting away from the arbitrary Malthusian constraint of the gold standard to allow for a better standard of living.

Also the gold standard conflicts with the cornucopian theory of natural resources that is popular with the same libertarian types. They don't seem to see the conflicting assumptions they are making about natural resources in the two theories. Gold is just another element listed in the periodic table, after all.
