The original series saw Pike confined to a VR in a wheelchair after an injury. I thought was interesting because Kirk made sure his fellow starship captain was well cared for in a Federation senior care home. Maybe the prequel involves Pike programming his VR in an original-series level holodeck tech to see himself as captain in a far flung future beyond the original series, and even beyond the New Generation series.
