The area around him grew dark, the smoke would ensnare him and the tendrils of flame would consume him. And yet... just as he took steps he thought would be his last, he was lifted from the scorched earth below. Hoisted into the air, by the beating of large, dark wings. What ever the creature was had gripped his scruff like he was a mere pup. Forcing his head to look downward to the forest below. The smoke and ash forced him to keep his eyes closed, making it impossible to see what ever was carrying him. Suddenly he felt their direction change, panic burst through him as he felt the wind now, whipping at his body while they headed in a direction he could only describe as 'down'. He felt the grip on his scruff release right before falling onto the hard packed earth.
For a moment, he laid still as the dead. Utterly shell shocked from the experience he just had. But slowly, surely, he rose to his feet. He coughed out the smoke that tried to strangle him, breathing in the fresh air. It burned almost as much as the fire had, but in a reassuring way. He would live after all. Adrenaline still coursed within him, but he was unsure if it was that, or pure terror that made his legs shiver with anticipation. A soft voice pulled him from what ever trance he was in. "... Are you alright?" The beginning of what was said was lost to him. He looked toward the source of the voice and found, not some unknown predator waiting to eat him, but a large female wolf. He stared blankly at her for a moment, the way she carried those dark leather wings, and how she stood told him she was exhausted. But still he was wary. "Talk." Her voice rang out again. Though only moments before he had feared for his life, and even now was trembling with anxiousness, hearing another sound besides the crackle of flames was slightly calming. Enough to find his own voice at least.
He stood a little straighter before he spoke, "I've survived worse." He responded to the female. Despite all the coughing from before, the words stung as he spoke them. But there was clarity within what he said. He was not worse for wear entirely, and by some miracle, he had survived a fire. That was better than he could have hoped for. Especially given that the same moment this female before him had plucked him from the ground, he had almost stopped running...
