“There is no need for a smaller posture with me.”
Elvira’s ears twitched slightly, and a smile curled her lips as her eyes glittered. She felt the empty space where he’d stood when he backed up, and her heart clenched as she wished he’d come closer again. She uncoiled herself like a blooming flower, bringing herself tall and proud. When he said her name again, her tail curled, arching over her back.
“You seemed a bit shocked at the soul-tie.”
She gave a slight nod. “I’ll admit, it took me by surprise,” she said softly. “I only recently arrived to Starfall.” When he asked about her horn, she lowered her head a little before she remembered his words about not being small. She raised it back up again, steeling herself for her next words. “My mother was killed for her horn, as was my brother. So, I taught myself to keep it hidden; it seemed safer that way.”
Emotions raged through her as she remembered flashes of her puppyhood, and she lowered her gaze as she stood a steadying breath. She could smell her mother’s blood, could feel the stickiness of blood on her fur from her brother when she’d hidden under him. Most of those memories she’d suppressed, and she wasn’t going to taint her new pack with those memories. She had new memories to make and, apparently, a soulmate to share them with. His scent crept to her nose, and she felt the tension and memories fading from her mind.
“Who was the one to greet you and accept you, anyway. I have to make sure to thank them.”
Elvira smiled, tongue lolling from between her fangs. “Balerion himself greeted me,” she said humbly. “He accepted my bid to join Drekistone.” She saw Syrax’s starry tail causing a mild whirlwind behind himself, and she laughed softly as she strode boldly up to him, feeling comforted by his close proximity. On impulse, she touched her nose to his, and her golden eyes shimmered with emotion as warmth spread throughout her body again, her tail wagging slowly behind her.
