Irina heard Hecate’s shriek and felt a grim wave of satisfaction. That was bolstered as Hecate completely missed her; however, that satisfaction quickly disappeared as the witch’s claws raked across her eyes. Irina stood stone-still. She felt blood dripping across her fur and skin. Goddamn. That was a good hit. Her vision was gone. Pain pounded her face. Irina took a shallow breath.
If she’d lost. . . . This was ridiculous. Still, she’d given Hecate a dislocated rib, taken her ear, and scarred her; Irina was not to walk away from this without having given it her all. Although, in aftermath, her mind replayed through the pain moves she could have taken instead. Her mind whirred to her pack. Would they dare to challenge Hecate, if it turned out she was the victor? Or would . . .
What would Irina do?
She was sightless. She had good enough hearing, but . . . it might not be enough. Undoubtedly if she had to flee, Marigold and Rambaldi would go with her, since Irina refused to live beneath Hecate. But she was afraid. A little bit. Just a little bit.
