There are some pieces in the Wiki world that are well documented throughout, so you have a way to check the source (did I mention, ALWAYS check the source?, including the author and, if applicable, a publisher.)
If you are looking for serious information, go to scientific papers, specialty organizations, educational sites, etc. Compare three different, unrelated sites to see what they say about X. If those three are effectively the same, then you probably have good information worth footnoting.
