It does, but as you point out, popular/controversial topics are self-policing.

I've seen claims over the years that Wikipedia is actually more reliable a source than any conventional encyclopedia, but I've never looked any deeper into those claims. I've got a handful of articles on there, myself. All deep in my field, of course.
