Back to those sorts of films, I loved the genre of the war epic, and look back at them with the feeling they were the epitome of the film-makers art. No computer generated imagery, phenomenal model work and camera work, the tour de force of the propmaster who, unable to find a real HE-111 or cruiser tank or whatever would make a full sized one.
In Tora Tora Tora, P-40s made of fibreglass, the Japanese aircraft made from Harvards and the Vultee BT series trainers. Madness, but the Kate torpedo bombers were made from mingling the two together if memory serves, and it was so well done many of those repro Japanese planes are still flying airshows today.
The rack behind my chair where DVDs reside, enshrining my favourites in a permanency unfound in streaming services, contains several of these, BoB, Bridge Too Far, Wild Geese, Zulu, Tora, Patton, just to name a few.
