Trip 4 to the AT&T store where I said (politely) enough was enough; either we find out a solution rather than continue to serve the god of process or I'm "exploring other options". Finally twiddled the account such that I am going back to a flip phone and getting one of those robustly built ones with the tradesman in mind (still beating on racecars, so the armoured ones are attractive)
I need a reliable communications device, not a social portal. I've no interest in sharing every detail of my life or any number of other things the iPhone tries to introduce me to; "I can show you best cycling routes. Ask Siri this! Your cousin's daughter sent you a friend request. Carry cash and credit cards no longer with Apple-pay".
I loved the camera in that thing. It was formidable. The Satnav was nice. There are useful things but for every useful thing there are a hundred things it can do I have no use for, and most of the useful things can be competently handled with a tablet. All that broad capability comes with complexity at the expense of reliability. I don't want a phone that requires periodic updates and I especially want nothing to do with the abysmal notion of "support" this experience has made all too clear is the price for the privilege.
I will say everyone involved tried and did so with a smile on their face. The system has these poor people in line for verbal nuking as it is absolutely unworkable. No wonder they burn out at it.
I've given the smartphone a good honest go and, for me at least, it just isn't worth it. It could have been so good, but glad to be shot of it as it exists.
