Slang terms or the corruption of normal terms both get my goat even though as a lover of English I should accept that this is the normal way languages are altered and perhaps enriched.
Maybe.
My grandparents felt the same way about the numerous 'Americanisms' that entered our vocabulary thanks to WW2 and television. I remember my grandpa didn't like 'cool' at all.
At first I was unflattering about 'bling' but it grew on me partly because its so reminiscent of the comic book terms used to exaggerate something that cannot be as adequately illustrated. Take 'bling' what choice does the artist have? Either a lot of little lines radiating out from the item or else a sort of shadow mask of similar shape, thats straight lines rather than the curvy ones used for flames.
Since in a previous post I made my contempt for 'trending' (yuk!) clear - I mean in my day to say someone was trendy was an insult! -then its no surprise that I lose touch with the terms mentioned since they are found mainly on 'social media' which I also ignore.
Sigh. It is annoying when some piece of information is so larded with webslang that one cannot decipher it.
I do sound like a grumpy old man don't I?
