Understand I'm not being a grumpy old reactionary about the notion that personal pronouns such as he, him, his, are unsuited for many folks for whom their identity is now becoming accepted in society. I'm fine with non-gendered pronouns. My issue is using the plural in circumstances referring to a single person; reading something with they and them being used as a singular pronoun just confuses the entire piece of prose, and prose, after all, is intended for communication.
Clarity matters to me, so use the perfectly good "it" in the singular and "them" in the plural (that plural pronoun already existing in English). Job done and no confusion in the clarity.
I might be a bit more pragmatic about evolution of language; sensible evolution that improves clarity, adapts new concepts and norms, and even for brevity I can accept just fine.
But the final arbiter has to be clarity. Its the purpose of language.
