THE PLOT THICKENS
The end of the story will make Charles the replacement for Zefram Cochrane who is killed during the 3rd World War. The Borg knew this from the timeline they used to destroy the Phoenix.
In the meantime Charles is on ice, in stasis, while his father recreates and successfully completes the tachyon drive with which he hopes to rescue his son.
A few famous WW2 boffins will turn up as George's friends, men like Barnes Wallace who advises him on fuselage construction, Geoffrey De Havilland makes a strong case for using wood instead of metal and Watson Watt drops by to offer help with radar .
The quasi feline mediator decides to aid George in locating Charles who is transferred to an aging and learning facility so that he can be prepared to play the part of Cochrane and fly the Phoenix at the appointed date to attract the Vulcan ship which is the first step towards forming the Federation.
George is permitted to see his son whilst still in training for his final role but George is regretfully infomed that he must return to his own era since otherwise the substitution would not work.
During George's frantic work to complete the tachyon drive, his mediator gives him some insight into who its masters are, why Earth is under quarantine and a few more snippets of useful information about timeline integrity and the struggle to keep them intact and uncorrupted.
Human imagination is a problem the masters haven't previously encountered and Star the mediator gives Georg,e some insight into what sort of chaos peoples beliefs can cause.
