My uncle farmed Christmas trees for years, and we got ours from him. After he retired from that, we got them from local cut-your-own farms but never off a lot.
My uncle and my dad taught me the tricks of keeping a real tree. First thing before standing it inside was to take a saw and recut the butt to re-open the "veins" of the thing. Then, the water was cut with glycerin which was pulled up into the tree and quite literally glued the needles on from inside as well as captured water in the tree long after it stopped pulling it up from the stand.
Now, since that generation is gone, we use an artificial tree. They make them with very nice form and detail. We got the current one on a deep discount, so actually less than what a live-tree costs anymore.
One thing I very much miss is the smell of the house with a live tree in it, though.
