"As long as we ourselves remain better than this, we never will be of this."

For those of us on this side of the puddle for whom the next four years will be up close and personal:

We can do much to stand against the forces of greed and avarice that masquerade as the America First movement, the Tea Party movement, the New Republicans who have been legally and legitimately elected.

It does not matter they have cleverly and cynically manoeuvred the system for their own gain, for the purpose of avoiding prosecution for things for which you and I, the average citizen, would be properly imprisoned, or positioned themselves to further enrich themselves, they have been legally and legitimately elected.

Before us lies four years of the wealthy financier class empowered over us as our government whilst twisting the Constitution, guided by their lawyers, for their own advantage. The New Gilded Age lies before us. Those promised tax breaks will be theirs, not ours. Federal programmes and policy will line their pockets, not benefit the people or the world. But, they have been legally and legitimately elected by the people so to do.

We can suffer this or we can be a force of the positive. We can make a difference for our neighbours by lending a hand or even just a smile. We can make a difference in our towns and cities by being charitable with what we might have, by turning a hand to the tasks of caring for our less-fortunate amongst us by donating to a food-bank or time to a soup kitchen, or unloading our excess to a charity shop.

We can do walk-a-thons for cancer victims, cut a veteran's lawn for him or her, raise funds for a historical society or the local arts council.

We can consciously stick it to the wealthy and make it a point to buy at a local shop on the High Street rather than off Amazon or eBay, eat out weekly at a family-owned diner rather than Macdonalds. We can decide to not trade our old iPhones for new on an annual basis. We can decline to support those who would advertise on Fox News or CNN. Keep it in mind with every decision.

We can ignore those platforms entirely and just get our news from the Beeb once a day so we can shout over our morning coffee, be done with it, and be a helluva lot happier in our day for doing that. While you're at it, drop a couple stone, get outdoors, work on your own wellbeing, too.

They played us all by encouraging anger, suspicion, and hate. Let us be the ones to end it, one act at a time, starting now.

Maybe the idea is better said: "Whoever remains better than this, will never be of this."

Time to get busy, then.
