Google et al are placed or in the process of being placed as the initial sources for any answer to the average human's question, and the average human is too ignorant of the subject, whatever subject, to question what is returned in their search as anything but fact (as opposed to truth). That level is as far as they need go, for the vast majority, and the shared commonality of that "knowledge" makes it the new "fact". Your exercise is a lovely example of this facet of the end of traditional knowledge.
History, the academic discipline of interpreting events to understand the human story, is now an obsolete notion simply because the foundations upon which that interpretation is developed are more and more likely altered. As importantly, the interpretation itself no longer is subject to any vetting or peer review, but immediately published for consumption by the masses as truth.
