Not a weak example at all, nor a particularly unusual one.

One of the basic problems is the notion that the Information Age in general and AI in particular can have fantastic promise to make humanity's life better.

There will always be someone somewhere who will find the criminal in it all, profit and power, and exploit it. Guaranteed.

To concentrate on the former and poo-poo the latter is worse than folly.

This can be as dangerous and potentially destructive as the harnessing of nuclear reaction, and not just academically or intellectually, but physically.

It is something to be considered very very carefully from both an ethical and existential standpoint, yet we have the ethics-be-damned entities, technocrats like Musk who only see profit, the anti-ethical nation states like the Chinese and the Americans exploiting it for competitive-nationalist power reasons, &c.

All of this can be a power for the good of humanity, in many ways even moreso than the harnessing of nuclear reaction, if in ethical hands. Indeed, it can be the gateway to the sort of life imagined in the world envisioned by the likes of Gene Roddenberry.

However, in the hands of the technocrats, the info-miners, and the anti-ethical powers (America, China, &c) for whom profit and power far outweigh law and ethics, that future looks very different. I believe there is that much potential in this next step in the Information Age, being the creation of Artificial Intelligence, that we stand at this threshold.

This will make Tube Alloys and Manhattan look like a toddler shitting in the swimming pool.
