Because healthcare is an industry, though, each corporation has its own "portal" to log into for your summaries and records repository.
If you have to deal with more than one, it becomes a "goat-roping" event (a wonderful bit of descriptive slang from the Southwestern part of the country) because there can be multiples you have to deal with.
In my case, I have four that I'm expected to keep up with. None of them share info between them and they do have the purpose of placing the responsibility of records keeping on the patient rather than the "practice" (the corporation).
They use these things for messaging, so there is an expectation I log in on demand, something I tend to ignore, which results in a flurry of auto-generated texts, voice-mail, and emails demanding my attention. I take pleasure in ignoring them too, but at that point any intrinsic value in having these systems is pretty much lost in the process.
I have as much time to devote to this as I do to texting and social media; this easily could devolve into a significant daily time-investment and I know folks who have fallen into the trap of scheduling an hour or more each morning "managing their health care" by logging in each day and doing everything the various corporations tell them they should do, either on-line or by appointment in person. I flatly refuse to play.
If there was one system shared by the lot of them, it could be useful; efficient both for me and for the corporations I'm forced to deal with. Apparently that is socialism or communism or against the Constitution or some other damn thing.
Instead, their use only benefits the industry; certainly not me. Like so many things in this country, it's a good idea abused and sacrificed at the alter of profit.
