That's how I was brought up, too, that billing a Christian lay in actions, not just words.

I never liked the Calvinist notion that God 'rewards' his chosen with material wealth in this world...which leads to the perception that if you're poor, it's because you deserve to be. That's obnoxious victim-blaming. Sadly it's at the heart (so to speak) of Republicanism.
