You can introduce letter note names later.
Show her patterns. Motifs. Individual notes are like letters. Put them together to make words- musical motifs, and strings of motifs to make sentences.
With very young children, I associate motifs with animals at the zoo. To catch a herd of unicorns, they must play the eight notes of a Do major scale. If they miss a note, they miss the animal. When they catch the whole herd, to let them go, they must play down the scale. Count their numbers with them so they know when to stop at eight.
Other octaves are larger and smaller animals. C3 to C4 might be bison. C2 to C3 might be rhinoceroses. C1 to C2 are elephants.
Going up, C4 to C5 are chipmunks. C5 to C6 are butterflies. C6 to C7 are bumblebees. Playing the scale going up catches them. Playing the scale going down releases them.
Since she is older, you can introduce fingering.
1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. going up right hand
5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 3, 2, 1 going down right hand
5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 3, 2, 1 going up left hand
1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 going down left hand.
Very quickly she will be playing that scale.
Ask her to catch elephants with her left hand, then rhinoceroses with her right hand
crossing her left hand over, she catches bison with her left hand. Then unicorns, or zebras with her right hand. Crossing her left hand over, she catches chipmunks with her left hand, and then butterflies with her right hand.
See the patterns? She's playing all the keys and isn't afraid of it. She has FUN, and that's the goal.
You can look away from a painting, but you can't listen away from a symphony![]()
