Van came out of the Irish Show Band tradition, played saxophone, had a father with an enormous collection of American Jazz and R&B. He formed 'Them' out of that, and did R&R. Then he moved to jazz and R&B and did amazing things like 'Astral Weeks' and sings like 'Wild Night.'
