Yeah, can't really tell but doesn't look like Red Tailed. Was just mowing and a Mississippi Kite swooped down and snatched something off the ground about 12 feet in front of the mower.

AI says we have Mississippi Kites here as well...the phone doesn't show

but the hawk has a white head - could have dark feathers at the crown but since I don't have an aerial view...don't know. Still can't talk my son into letting me use the drone.

There are four hawks hunting in our area this morning...a few more off in the distance a bit over a corn field so not worried when they stay over near the corn

I am not fast enough with my phone video thingy to catch them when they swoop over my yard. The one I got the pic of just happened to perch up in top of the tree.

I just really don't want any of them to be goshawk's...which we do get here but usually don't notice them until later in the fall

Goshawks are fierce! Have you thought about getting yourself an owl outfit and when the swoop down you could just grab them.

I think if I wore a glove and held my arm up holding chicken meat, the hawk that I got a picture of would probably land. I think some are from the Raptor Recovery which is about 10 miles west of me and the husband/wife team that ran it would release the hawks back into the wild after healing them. This hawk is not afraid of humans at all and often glides in circles very close above me. I think he/she would know it was me - owl suit or not. You are correct - it has my number. I just learned that last year the recovery closed as the husband passed and the wife did not want to continue. I suspect this may have lead to the huge population we now have here - as most would have been returned to the wild.

The hawk I nailed with the hose had red stripes on the bottom of its wing span...it does not like me at all. Which is fine.

If the hawk was hand fed it would work. You can also tie a string to a piece of meat about 15 ft. long and just drag it on the ground. IF he was hand fed and trained he will hit it. Without a welders glove you'd get some marks.

lolol...I don't want to make friends out of the hawks.

Would prefer that they simply stay out off my land

and leave the songbirds alone.

Had another thought this morning - haven't seen any stray cats for several days now

They're not going to leave the song birds alone, they're just hawks doing what hawks do. Feral cats do the same thing. Around here they don't go after fox squirrels but give the flying squirrels hell. I've packed off more than I can count but if I get caught it comes with a hefty fine.

I've seen a few Red-Tailed Hawks in the Huachuca Mountains of Arizona.

From what I remember, their tails are definitely noticeably red. I'd go with Cooper's.
