I never met Roland, but he seems to have been a really keen sort of chap - a great example for many of us.
One thing is certain, we are complicated creatures - looking after our health is more important, the older we become - like an old car, needs more attention each year.
I've found that since I retired aged 65, 9 years ago - Doctors, Dentists, Hospitals, pills & potions (Quacks as my Sheila calls them) become more important.
The things you may have done, or not done for yourself when younger - become greater factors.
I enjoy walks at least a couple of times a day, meeting Dog walkers, a couple of Donkeys & an old horse who looks really "Laid back" is lovely - yes they get spoilt with Carrots
It reduces my thinking of an appointment with a Camera I have next month - looking at an area, where the sun does not shine
But RIP Roland, you did a great deal to perpetuate something many people clearly & dearly love - & many others, including the chap I'm replying to now, will carry on that perpetuation, into the future.
Caroline Continues.
Hello All,
My e mail locked up and in getting running again I lost access to various things including this forum. All fixed now.
Concerning Roland we are all a bit shocked. Only good thing to say ( maybe ) is that he was not in distress for very long. In 1989 my Father woke up at night feeling unwell and told my Mother that he would ring 999 for an ambulance. He walked downstairs picked up the phone to dial and lost conciousness before he could do so. Same problem as with Roland and similarly he never did become conscious again.
Having done this job for some decades I am the first to admit that my enthusiasm is blunted. But Rolands enthusiasm never wavered, nor the range of things he undertook, the effort he expended, the materials he provided and the money he raised. Basically a power house of energy and while I teased him at times for being naive, perhaps I should have tried to be more like him.
He specified in advance that he wished to be an organ donor and I don't know how the admin and bureacracy of that works. I guess we will learn of the place, date and time of the funeral in due course.
PM.
Sad news I'm afraid - Roland, who was a great friend to Radio Caroline - running the Southampton group for just one thing, has passed away from a brain bleed yesterday - this was from Ray Robinson.
Sympathy goes to Roland's family & loved ones.
Yet another Free radio supporter gone.
RIP Chap
