At sea it can be hell to try and get spares - it happened in Laser's early days when the modulation reactor was way over-driven, over-heated and melted many windings. It was fine into the dummy load, which was perfect Rr and Zero-J, but into the antenna the reactance ws awful and constantly changing. `solid state would never have tolerated it, but the tubes pumped away until the reactor gave up.
A replacement was flown over to Gatwick, but instead of being collected, it was addressed to "the Punch Tavern, Whitstable" and the crate showed up on a small flat-bed truck.
