You might be thinking of United Christian Broadcasters who used 549 and 6200 from transmitters in Ireland, think the same site? Was unlicenced. At one point they broadcast from the Kaliningrad Russia transmitter on 1386 evenings, there's another report I found saying they'd been granted longwave and mediumwave frequencies by Russia. That would be late 1990's onwards IIRC.
Spirit Radio's medium wave frequency had an audience in Northern Ireland, used to be complaints from them online when 549 was off the air. Previous Message
Why oddly?
It is located in County Monaghan, part of the ancient province of Ulster, but part of the Republic of Ireland.
A lot of speculation about this site all over the web based on no fact. Previous Message
I'm certain it was Licensed - oddly by Southern Ireland, but seemed to put a stronger signal to the north... & Scotland.
Religious reasons? perhaps.
There are two nice Harris DX 25s there, seems a sin to not warm them up? Previous Message
Wasn't Spirit radio 549 unlicenced ? Pirate in other words. Maybe I'm thinking of something else. I Seem to remember it being listed as such. They are still on air licenced on FM.
It would seem a bit strange to seek to broadcast on Medium wave in a country which no longer uses the band so there would be little chance of listeners finding any new station that appeared on it. I guess they are mainly hoping for some overspill into the north western area of the UK.
