Mac, people hunted, fished, collected, fruit, berries, herbs veg etc. People did what they were good at, any excess would have been exchanged with others eg meat for fish etc. Yes life was hard, life expectancy was relatively low, if you reached 40 you were old, but people had to be a lot more resourceful than we could probably ever be.
