The breakdown of chemicals turning into liquid is called leachate. The gases are often burnt off via pipes in the tip. My bungalow was built on a refuse tip. At night we get movement causing the odd noisy crack. We sometimes experience strong smells such as tobacco! Our bungalow is also on a concrete raft!
