I said I was uncertain as to why they started when they did. This was an event organised by The Ridley CC. They were always unconventional in what they did. However, whatever they did, they did it very well and were the most popular club in the area. Whilst other clubs such as the Barnesbury held their annual prize giving at the Old Assembly Rooms with dancing to an orchestra, The Ridley held a smoker in The Milvain club. Here you could smoke yourself silly or sick or both on Woodbines, Pasha, Capstan and a hundred other varieties. Then there was the beer for those who could see their way to the bar through the fog. So, Malcolm, if you can accept that, perhaps you can understand why selecting midnight for a cycle ride was not out of character with this great unconventional club.
