As usual I have added some locations.The photo was taken 88 yra ago so lots of changes since then.

Thanks for the photo, Norman.

Always makes me smile: the area between the Fever Hospital (M) and the Lakes (I & K) are covered with allotments.

These must have been cleared in the late 40's-early 50's to make way for Johnston Ave, Toner Ave, Queens Crescent, Dukes Avenue etc.

So after everyone had "Dug for Victory" during the War, were they offered alternative allotments?

Or were the large gardens enough not to need an allotment?

Malcolm , your comments about the allotments reminded me my dad had one opposite the Fever hospital in the late 1940’s . My Mum was not impressed. All I can remember him growing was Potatoes and rhubarb. She used to get very annoyed , as she said he used to do nothing but sit smoking on his allotment.

Sheila, that's what allotments are for: watching vegetables grow, and talking rubbish with your mates !!!!

It's a tough job, but SOMEONE has to do it, or it will NEVER get done!

Yes Malcolm, it always made me laugh. Ex Royal Navy man, Capstan full strength .

Capstan Full Strength? WOW, they used to run destroyers on them in WWII.. LOL

Sadly they took his life at aged 60. Remember Mrs Warwick’s shop in Birtwhistle Avenue. After he died she told my Mum, he was buying 60 cigs a day and she queried him and asked if his wife knew, but he just laughed and joked “ don’t tell her”. That was 1956. We are all wiser now.

WOW, Warwicks on Birtwhistle Avenue!! Along with Ned Danby the greengrocer, and Norman the butcher...Happy memories....

Yes, I remember all the shops you mention. Ned Danby was a character, his wife was very ladylike. Also Maggie O’ Roark had a general dealers , but I always used Dessie and Reuben Warwick. I think there was a butchers but can’t remember the name.

And Meggie O'Rourke had her "Back shop" that stayed open 'till maybe 9pm? Just a window in the back door, were you could buy sweets & pop!

I think the Butchers was Norman Robinson.

Thanks Norman, I have a vague memory of a butchers. Does anyone else remember, across the road from the shops there was a large open area between the two semi’s on either side. Noticed later two semi’s were built as a fill in.
