I am very interested to know your thoughts on the absurd idea, that Starmer has agreed to it is an idea from his beloved EU, that we in the UK have breathalysers fitted to our cars?

I think this a a crazy idea for the following:

It is unhygienic, imagine if you hire a car you won’t have any idea who has been using the gadget previously, do they have cold sores, do they have an illness, let’s not forget what can be passed on whilst breathing.

You take your car for a service the engineer has to use the gadget to test the car, the same as above applies.

I realise that sanitizers will be used but I am sorry I still don’t fancy the idea that I have to use my gadget after someone, that I don’t know, has been breathing into.

Using sanitizers is another problem - what is used in making a sanitizer- alcohol, how will Muslims or other none drinkers feel about that? What about an alcoholic what would happen to them, I know it is all hypocritical but it could happen?

When the police use breathalysers once used they are disposed of, if the gadgets used in cars are once only use do we suddenly have millions of used plastic breathalyser kits to be disposed of?

Just my thoughts but I would be interested to know what opinions board members have on, to my mind, a really idiotic idea also a very unhealthy one at that.

I dont think Starmer should have any say in the running of the UK.
He is the worst possible PM EVER.
If any other PM's properties had been firebombed it would have been investigated & the reasons it happened exposed to us.
Why did Foreign 'rent boys' firebomb his properties months ago & we've heard nothing.
If it had been Boris, it would have been all over the News.

Liz I have had a breathalyser kit in my car since started traveling to France over 20 years ago, it sits in the glove compartment, but as never stopped by police not used and replaced on expiry date.

You must have had one of those kits in your car or vehicle on your travels to Italy etc.

If they are saying that every car in the U.K. should carry a kit, nowt wrong with that. You do that anyway if you cross the Channel.

Yes it could be part of the Service and MOT. But only to check if there is an unopened kit. In any case don’t see the point of doing that, it’s up to the car owner to have the kit in the car..

In any case they are only for you to check yourself. The police will always use their own equipment as anything else will not stand up in court in U.K. No idea what happens in France but assume it’s the same.

Yes it would bring us in line with the EU regs but so what!

Allan’s right. When we drove to France regularly when the kids were little it became law to carry a breathalyser kit in the car. The kit we carried was about the size of a cigarette packet & contained 2 breathalysers. It cost about £2 & was single use like the original bag type the police used when they first came out. I always thought they were a bit pointless because the idea was to self test & I thought it would actually encourage drink driving, you have a drink or 2, test yourself negative so drive even though you’re impaired. I’m not sure if it’s still required in France I recall there was talk of doing away with it several years ago.

@Allan C. Have you checked the expiry date on yours as part of the law was the kit had to be in date.

I am well aware of what equipment is required to be carried in cars whilst driving through Europe and other countries, it is not the mobile breathalyser kits I am referring to, it is the permanent fixture of a breathalyser in your car that idiot Starmer is agreeing to be fitted within the car, as usual he is being a slave to the EU, please read the article for clarification.

I personally don’t think that I am making a mountain out of a rather large molehill!!!

Sorry Liz, didn’t mean to offend. Personally I wouldn’t take anything published online as completely factual. Although when it comes to Starmer anything’s possible.
The “black box” data recording (OBD) has been part of modern car design for several years now & I really can’t see manufacturers agreeing to fitting breathalysers into cars, driverless cars would probably be here before that.
Again, sorry if I came across as having a go at you. It certainly wasn’t my attention.

Bob, no offence taken my skin is thicker than that, it was a molehill jibe that was made but was then removed thing was I had already read it.

The EU are very keen on fitting these systems into cars, whatever they want to do within the EU is fine with me so long as their Laws are not our Laws, but like you say with Starmer anything is possible, he loves the EU pity he doesn’t go and live there. Enjoy your day.

Personally I cannot see the point of it - a first aid kit or a fire extinguisher in my mind would be more sensible.

You should have put the item up in the first instance and we would have known where it came from.

I understand that the Daily Mail does get a lot of spoof items in it, weather this is one or not remains to be seen

The names of the two writers, let’s say ODD.

Anyway For it to work there would have to be changes in the law.

In my mind it would never work. Too vulnerable to malfunction and abuse.

As it is a suspected drunk driver is taken to a Police Station and retested there and maybe blood tests.

If you read the comments 2.1k the first few gives you what people think.

This could maybe old stuff resurrected from some years ago?

Reading much further down these devices would have to fitted to repeat drink drivers. Yes I would agree with that but to the general Joe Blogs no.

The biggest safety thing that could be done is get rid of these TV touch screen type control panels. They frighten me, maybe just too old school. Any information that has to be fed through a drivers eyes is a dangerous distraction. For a driver to take his hand off the steering wheel for a touch screen is madness as that takes his eyes off the road.

Thank goodness I will never have a car with this fancy stuff fitted.

Black boxes fitted to a car but for insurance purposes

Had heard about them but until recently never came across them.

However our granddaughter has just passed her driving test and to get car insurance, I assume her insurance company requires a Black Box fitted. She has just fitted a poster to the rear window stating that she has a black box fitted and therefore her speed is restricted.

Apology accepted, but for info the mandatory requirement to carry a breathalyser kit when travelling in France was abolished in January 2020, there has never been a requirement to have a breathalyser kit in the car when travelling within Italy.
