Hartleyburn Avenue and Birtwhistle Avenue Shops

A few years ago I wrote posts about my memories of the shops on the corner of Hartleyburn Avenue and Victoria Road West, and the shops on Birtwhistle Avenue. They were saved by Barry Cram on his Hebburn.org website which is sadly no longer available.

I have set up a Wordpress Blog site where I have posted both of those articles in case anyone is interested in reading them. I like to write, so there are other posts on various subjects there too!

For AJG and hopefully Mac Hardy

Mac Hardy may remember those shops hopefully the same as I do.

The shop on the corner of Victoria Road West and Hartleyburn was the Post office and in front of it maybe a telephone box.

I cannot remember what that shop sold other than being a Post Office.

The next shop going down Hartleyburn was Kelly’s shop and that may have been foodstuffs.

I have photos taken in the late 50’s of the daughter of the Kelly’s with her husband together with the group of campers, the men being Reyrolle workers in the main.

The next shop down was the newsagents.

I remember Danby’s being built across the road from Kelly’s.

There were many changes to those shops over the years that I visited a relation living nearby.

Hello Andrew,
My son Matthew is a self employed Gas Engineer and he did work at Norman Robinson's house in 2018. I later popped round to see Norman & his daughter. He was now in his 90s and during our chat he told me he'd served in the Royal Navy WW2.His daughter showed me a letter Norman & his RN colleagues got from General Dwight D Eisenhower for what they did to help the 'D Day Landings' 6th June 1944.
Below is what they did in WW2 and then a photo of Norman when he worked in Atkinson's Butchers in the Newtown.

When we were young, we never knew of these Hero's that had served in wars. They never boasted did they?

No, Norman, they never did boast, it was just them doing their duty for their country. They were truly a different breed; there's a reason why they call them the Greatest Generation!
