I was describing to my grand children how when I was young and were going to Newcastle on the train we bought the ticket in the office & sat in the waiting room until the train arrived. There was a big roaring coal fire keeping people warm unlike these days where your ticket comes from a Ticket machine & you stand on the platform awaiting the Metro. I told them our electric trains were just as good as the modern metro trains. Am I right?

My Grandfather ( Who I never Knew) was called George Hardy. At the time there were two George Hardy’s in Hebburn,, one was the Station Master at the Hebburn Station the other was a Rent Collector but I never knew which was my Grandfather ?

I remember when I was a kid when the trains were still electric, crossing over the wooden crossing point rather than going over the bridge.

No overhead power lines then. It was a live third rail. There was a break in the third rail where the crossing point was, but it still put the shivers up me!!!

H & S were a little lax then.

Just loved that platform! My school mate the late Ed Nesbitt and I used to go in there for a warm after school!

as kid I used to stand on spuges bridge and get covered in steam when the train left for South Shields, much later as a Dad we would get the new Electric trains

I think that you may be mixing up your memory of the line and bridges.
By my recollection the Hebburn to Shields line went nowhere near Spuggies bridge which was on the Newcastle to Sunderland branch.
